Conference Call Coverage - 11:01 AM

What's going on at Alcoa? Removing temporaries causing damage?

"Working with Alcoa on a daily, hourly basis to get the fasteners we need. The set up puts out one wad of bolts at a time. Substitute (flightworthy) fasteners being used, they however add weight to the aircraft."

"700something fasteners left to install."

What type of new tests for 787?

Composite material testing. Standard certification testing is ahead of us. More electric architecture is being tested with really good results."

A true second generation composite fuselage will only require fasteners between longitudinal and circumferential joints.

The mandrel molding method that Boeing is using on the 787 will most likely not be used much in the fuselages of tomorrow; where new non-standard load-bearing designs and configurations, such as the DLR sandwich panel concept, will have composite frames that are bonded/integrated/co-cured with the composite load-baring fuselage panels.

One should note though, that co-curing frames with the fuselage is a much easier untertaking with concave molds, rather than the convex molds that Boeing and it's partners are using on the 787 program.

Ah, do we see what Airbus might do?

Attempt at translation (apologies) ----
@dlr: the deplorable self-advertisement is more embarrassing than helpful. (which is it actually? do they want to sell this to Boeing?) if they wrote a serious publication, they might get notice scientifically. if the [Boeing method] should not succeed, then they will have received their confirmation.

..if they wrote a serious publication, they might get notice scientifically.

...hence the standard fuselage in the lower panel area is not an optimal "light" construction from the point of view of structural mechanics and arrangement of pits and cutouts in load-carrying structure requires the increased material consumption.

...and one can read your rebuttal to the fact that the fuselage of the 787 is far from an optimal construction from the point of view of structural mechanics, in which engineering publication?
